Views on nuclear weapons:

Replied to survey in November 2006 and said:

"I think a decision any time in the near future would be premature.

"Along with others in my party, I am concerned that the UK Government is running headlong into a decision which should be considered over a much longer timescale. Any decision must be based on full consideration of the international political and strategic context, threat assessment, cost assessments, proliferation implications and alternative options. It must address the future role and relevance of nuclear deterrence in the light of future threats, and the consequence for international peace and security. I wholeheartedly believe any replacement must also strictly conform with UK international legal obligations."

On 8 December Jim Wallaced Questioned Jack McConnell about renewing Trident saying - "Will he accept that many people, not just in my party, believe that the decision on Trident has been rushed and that no decision needs to be taken until 2014 ? The First Minister said that we live in an "uncertain and dangerous world". Where does he think that our independent nuclear deterrent should be targetted ?"
