| Trident debate 14 June 2007 |
| Abstained on motion to oppose the renewal of Trident |
| Views on nuclear weapons: |
|
Replied to question on nuclear power in March 2011:
"I favour a diverse mix of electricity generation and would not therefore not rule out new nuclear for the future if it is safe and necessary for Scotland. Any application for consent to new nuclear generation should be considered on its merits, in terms of safety, environmental impact and other planning considerations. If the nuclear inspectorate to decided to extend the operating lifetime of existing stations where it is safe and in Scotland's best interests to do so, I would respect that decision."

Voted against an SNP motion and a Lib Dem amendment. Both called on the UK Government not to go ahead at this time with the proposal to replace Trident.
By voting this way he prevented the Parliament from taking a stand against Tony Blair's plan to replace Trident submarines in 2024 and to keep nuclear weapons in Scotland until 2055.
