| Replied to survey in November 2006 saying he was opposed to the upgrading or replacing of Trident and said "Although I have no vote on the ultimate decision I will always argue that nuclear missiles are immoral and that we should be working towards their removal rather the renewal"

Voted against an SNP motion and a Lib Dem amendment. Both called on the UK Government not to go ahead at this time with the proposal to replace Trident.
By voting this way he prevented the Parliament from taking a stand against Tony Blair's plan to replace Trident submarines in 2024 and to keep nuclear weapons in Scotland until 2055.
