Views on nuclear weapons:

In response to publication of the Government's proposal to keep nuclear weapons in Scotland for the next 50 years, Mr McConnell said:

"I agree with the decision of the UK government to maintain the UK's independent nuclear deterrent and I fully support the associated commitment to further reduce the number of nuclear warheads in the UK."

Earlier, on 14 September 2006, he had said:

"I think there's a genuine debate that needs to take place this winter in the UK and elsewhere about whether or not we replace Trident unilaterally or whether we include that in international discussions in order to secure safeguards and guarantees from Iran and elsewhere."
