March 2010 - Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace supporting the replacement of Trident - letter from Willie Bain (pdf)
November 2009 - Willie Bain replied to a survey of candidates in the Glasgow North East byelection saying that he would not vote for the cancellation of the Trident renewal programme, nor would he vote for Trident to be decommissioned.
He said:
“In recent years, under Labour, the UK has become widely recognised as the most forward-leaning nuclear weapon state in generating momentum for disarmament.
You will be aware that the Prime Minister recently said that he is considering cutting back the UK’s trident fleet and he reiterated Britain’s commitment to halt the proliferation of nuclear weapons and promote disarmament.
I support the Labour Government’s aspiration to the reduction and eventual elimination of all nuclear weapons. I want to see a world without nuclear weapons but I believe the way to do that is through multilateral disarmament not unilateral disarmament. “
