Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying that he would vote against the replacement of Trident "We do not need nuclear weapons. Like a society full of handguns, a world with nuclear weapons risks their use either over time, by pressure of their numbers or an accident by misunderstanding. Had nuclear weapons existed since Roman Times the planet would likely have been destroyed centuries ago !"
