Patrick Harvie is responsible for raising the issue of Trident in the new Parliament. He proposed the original motion which opposed the renewal of Trident and voted for motion as amended.. "I sought to put before the Parliament a position that could gain the support of a majority of those members who are against the Government's proposals. A majority of members are against the Government's proposals and I hope that all those members, regardless of their motive for reaching that position, will be able to express it at decision time. If we do that, the message from Scotland will be very clear—the majority of Scots and a clear majority of their elected representatives in both Parliaments reject the Government's plan." |

Replied to survey in 2006 in November 2006 saying he was opposed to the upgrading or replacing of Trident and said "Like Green Party colleagues from aross Scotland, the UK and the whole world I am Fundamentally opposed to the development, possession and use of weapons of mass desctruction such as the trident missile system. The first political act I remember was taking part in a CND march as a child, and I will continue to take actions in support of disarmament in parliament,in public, and at the gates of Faslane for as long as these weapons exist. Their replacement or upgrading would show utter disregard for the goal of non-proliferation, and would make our world less safe for many years to come" |
