Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying that he would vote against the replacement of Trident

"I have all my life been opposed to any form of nuclear weapons. They are absolutely immoral. The monies could certainly be used on alleviating poverty, creating jobs. I have already made my intentions clear in all of my campaign literature."

Statement from Tam Smith:

"Unlike many politicians who chop and change their views on nuclear weapons, for whatever reason. I  have and always will remain opposed .to weapons of mass destruction which could lead to the destruction of any nation, let alone the thought of destroying the whole of  civilisation.I am totally against the Trident replacement programme.

"The debate seems to hinge on whether we can afford it or not. We certainly can at the expense of jobs etc. How many could we create with £75 billion plus. However the debate should not only be about cost.

"I would like us, as a nation, to pause for a moment and think of the destruction these weapons  can cause I am of the view that we should be working a lot harder throughout the world to remove them totally. No sensible person would surely ever want to use such weapons and I don't imagine for a moment that any world leader is stupid. Let's talk and keep talking for the sake of our children and our world.

"I keep thinking of the words of our great bard " That man tae man the world oer shall brithers be for a that." That is my greatest aspiration."
