Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying -
"Many thanks for your email. I am 100% against a like for like replacement of the Trident missile system. When the US and Russia have recently signed an agreement to reduce their own arsenals by 30%, Britain must match thier commitment by dramatically reducing our own arsenals. The Cold War is over and we no longer need a nuclear deterrent of such force readiness or destructive capacity. The strategic environment which necessitated the Trident system could not be more different than that of the comtemporary international stage. By scrapping Trident in favor of a dramatically reduced, less destructive and less agressively postured nuclear deterrent, the UK can send a powerful signal to our friends and adversaries that we are serious about nuclear disarmament and international peace. A like for like replacement for Trident will likely cost £100 billion over its lifetime and provide little security or military utility in the modern strategic environment. We can not ask other states to cease or renounce thier nuclear development if we are to commit ourselves to this replacement."
